fablab

Fablab Lisboa was created in 2013, a digital fabrication and prototyping lab aiming to support creativity and the development of new collaborative projects through universal access to equipment and knowledge, supporting entrepreneurship and innovation as a way to promote the economy of the city and help to develop the economy of the city. It is equipped with a set of accessible tools, from digital to analog, from motorized to manual tool, such as small and large milling machines, laser and vinyl cutting machines, 3D printers, as well as computers and respective computer programming tools supported by CAD and CAM software. The methodology adopted is the "learn by doing" way which starts in the digital conception of the project by the author and materializes it in the equipment available in the Fablab.

Through similar tools and techniques, anyone with common ideas and goals can collaborate, making the network grow and developing a community to support independent projects.

Throughout its 10 years of existence Fablab Lisboa has been one of the references in the local and national maker and innovation community especially due to its central role in the city’s ecosystem and openness to support new projects and ideas. The open-days, which happen every Tuesday and Thursday, are one of the main strategies to foster new products and services as everyone is invited to use the machines for free to learn, test and prototype.

In the last few years a lot of attention has been put on the relation with local strategic stakeholders, especially the academia. Being Lisboa one of the cities in Portugal with the highest number of students, the Fablab is making its way to become the intermediate between university based research and the city, in a movement of transforming the city in a living lab where anyone can have access to innovation and, especially, be an active part of it.
