SMART OPEN LISBOA
Smart Open Lisbon (SOL) is an open innovation program promoted by the municipality, organized in 6-month editions. After two more extended editions (focused on the city's global challenges), the program has focused on a vertical theme in each edition. Mobility, Housing, Covid-19 challenges, Environmental Sustainability and Energy Transition have already been addressed.
In each edition, companies and partners associated to SOL join startups from around the world to find innovative solutions to their challenges and to the city's challenges. The selected solutions have a unique opportunity to get support and direct access to leading companies and validate their solutions using real data in a real environment, while working directly with potential customers and/or partners. It is also a programme of partnerships and collaboration. Close relationships of partnership and collaboration are created in the course of each edition between partners and startups, and the city.
During the last six months, companies and entrepreneurs dedicated themselves to the development of the pilots in order to respond to the needs identified in the city, using real data, with a view to improving life in the capital.
The 6 pilot projects from the 8th edition are now being implemented in the city. Among the the pilots is an analytical tool, based on Artificial Intelligence and machine learning, developed by startup EVE in partnership with Brisa, and which assists in decision-making regarding the roadside assistance of its electric fleet.
In another pilot project, Brisa joined Schréder in a partnership with the Canadian startup Liveable Cities, which will monitor two motorway junctions operated by Brisa.
Schréder's technology, combined with Liveable Cities' sensor capabilities, will provide a solution to monitor vehicle behavior, speeds and environmental parameters and will allow Brisa to understand traffic behavior at intersections and understand its environmental impact.
Carris, also in conjunction with Schréder and the startup Liveable Cities, will monitor environmental conditions in its storage and maintenance facilities. This solution will make it possible to detect changes, while designing and implementing policies to improve the operational procedures used in the facilities.
ANA - Aeroportos de Portugal, together with Spanish startup Predictive Company is developing a pilot that will allow the integration of AI technology in Terminal 2 of Lisbon Airport, to make its air conditioning system more efficient. This project will also lead to energy savings, cost optimization and the reduction of CO2 emissions. Finally, the company is also studying the possibility of moving forward with new approaches and the implementation of wind micro turbines in an airport context.
The 9th edition is being designed, which will again address the theme of Mobility, to be launched in the summer of 2023.
SOL is an open innovation program, targeting start-ups from all over the world and innovative companies from the Lisboa ecosystem. In the eight editions of SOL, 878 startups have submitted applications, 64 pilots have been implemented, with a total of 29 partners such as EDP, GALP, SONAE, AWS, and many others.
